C. controversa Hemsl. Very similar to C. alternifolia, but
much taller, normally tree-like, to 15 m, branches also tiered, brown, pruinose (important
for identification!); leaves broad elliptic, short acuminate, 7-15 cm long, with 6 - 9
vein pairs, pubescent beneath, hairs all facing in one direction; flowers in flat, 10 - 15

'Variegata' (Barbier). Leaves white bordered. introduced by Barbier to the trade in
1896. Beautiful planted as a specimen; frequently found in French and Italian parks. The
most splendid specimen in Europe is in the park of Dunloe Castle, near Killarney, Ireland,
about 8 m high and 10 m wide, quite regular in its broad conical habit. Plate 76.
